The world doesn’t need another architect

"section": "what-we-do"

The world is currently experiencing a time of unparalleled upheaval that will impact the way we live, work, play and learn for generations to come. As creators of future places, we have used this moment to address where we go from here, starting with the elephant in the room:

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE ARCHITECT?

It would be wrong to ignore the tough reality that architecture on the whole has failed to keep up with the profound changes in the design and construction industry for decades. There has been an obvious shift over the years from a time when, in the positive context of massive regeneration, architects worked with a genuine sense of social and economic purpose, at the vanguard of innovation and change and were hugely instrumental in the development and delivery process.

As a studio, Architecture Initiative have always considered the industry’s inability to embrace change as an opportunity. Our practice was set up without the constraints of perceived convention. We genuinely have little interest in the, all too common, inward looking and self-congratulatory ‘club’ mentality and seek to involve and align ourselves much more closely with the community in which we work, our clients, other creative industries and consultants who have a much broader, varied and interesting creative and commercial agenda.

Value comes through challenging the conventional and finding innovative new ways of designing and delivering buildings. But it also goes beyond the tangible elements of architecture. Just being a designer is not enough anymore.

In this moment of seismic shifts it’s time for Architecture Initiative to re-establish a more ambitious purpose and to enter this new chapter with a commitment to act as a stronger and a more energised strategic partner to our clients and the communities we work with. Now, we are looking beyond architecture to what really matters – community, culture, commerce, experience, happiness and wellbeing.

We truly believe that this is the responsibility of the architect in today’s world.

Stop communicating solely with your peers who are
largely irrelevant and concentrate on communicating in a language that your clients understand. No one is interested in the number of awards you have won or how many publications you have been published in, they want to know how you can add value to their project.

EMBRACE
COMPLEXITY

Change and complex social, cultural and economic narratives are what drives our world forward. This is our starting point and through allowing these narratives to fundamentally inform our research, strategies, culture and partnerships we can create places that thrive in complexity and change.

MAKE IDEAS
ACCESSIBLE

Architects still present their ideas largely in a format that is generally unintelligible to the public. We work hard with specialists to present our work in a manner that is engaging, understandable and accessible.

PEOPLE
FIRST

Now more than ever it’s time that we stopped paying lip service to community involvement. Social value and placemaking have lost their value as meaningless and divisive epithets used by the industry to justify poor development. Creating social value lies at the heart of what we do because we know that happiness and a thriving economy go hand in hand. By prioritising people and understanding the shape of the society they want to live in, we in turn create more successful places.

BEYOND
DESIGN

Successful practice is now as much about business as it is about design. We need to remember that clients are responsible to their shareholders and investors, demonstrating an understanding of whole project issues, constraints, and budgets, designing intelligently and economically within prescribed cost plans.

INSTIGATE
CHANGE

We don’t wait for the world to come to us, 50% of our work is created through entrepreneurial initiatives. We are instigators, pioneering our own development foresight, proactively pursuing our vision.

INCLUSIVE
ARCHITECTURE

Encourage wholesale change in architectural education to make it relevant again and to encourage opportunity and much needed diversity in the industry.

 We are not
just architects

We are not just architects, we are so much more. Society and the built environment are complex, so must we be too.
