Wellington Primary School
New identity and street frontage created through expansion of existing school.
The expansion of the school facilities sought to accommodate an additional two-form entry while preserving the character of the existing Victorian school within the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Conservation Area.
In order to preserve key external play space the extension was raised above the ground plane, cantilevering to the street, and serves to signify a new identity and street frontage for the school. Cumaru hardwood cladding complements the existing school fabric and neighbouring buildings, while defining the new form.
Internally, glass and transparent materials facilitate supervision of the pupils as well as creating an inclusive environment.
Wellington Primary School extension was one of the last projects undertaken by Matt, Lee and Rowan before establishing Architecture Initiative.
