    Langdon Park Sixth Form

The new school building will sit on the school’s existing – but underused – ecology site, which is currently fenced off with no access for students. With Langdon Park conservation area to the north, the new addition is informed sensitively by the scale and materials of nearby buildings, much of which is housing, and five school blocks including the 1907 board school building. Pitched roofs and detailed brickwork ensures the new building sits comfortably within its surroundings.

The proposal includes eight flexible teaching classrooms, a collection of ICT rooms and ‘social areas’ distributed across the three levels. Circulation space is placed at the centre of the floor plan, allowing maximum light to penetrate into the main teaching areas, and an external steel stair core with coloured balustrade will feature at either end of the building.

Two types of cladding highlight different uses within: the key education accommodation is clad in brick in two colours, while the main entrance and external stair cores are wrapped in a timber rainscreen cladding.

A pedestrian entrance will be created to link the sixth form building to the main school, reinstating the historic route through the site via St Leonard’s Avenue, previously blocked by the school’s carpark. The landscaping will be enhanced, increasing the available green space and counteracting any impact from the disruption of the former ecology site. A secondary staff entrance, open at peak times, will be accessible via a new car park.
