pirbright road
Reinterpreting the Victorian townhouse, Pirbright Road provides eight contemporary new homes and a business premises on a narrow light industrial site in Southfields, South West London.
Occupied by commercial garages since the 1920s, the project comprises four duplex and four lateral apartments within a block composed as a contemporary reinterpretation of a Victorian terrace. Generous modern apartments and duplexes, flooded with natural light, are situated within three-storey town houses with full basements, designed to compliment and continue the existing adjacent Victorian terrace.
Arranged within four townhouse forms, to mirror the housing stock of the local area, the design was intended to be in keeping with the local vernacular, proposing a contemporary interpretation of the existing Victorian properties, through careful detailing of traditional materials and construction techniques.
The development also re-houses an existing car repair workshop within a new single storey commercial annex on the site, a neutral impact in terms of employment.
